Koh Phdao

We worked with Koh Phdo community based ecotourism in 2008. Our objective was to set up ecotourism development activity for this community as an alternative livelihood to reduce the fishing pressure in the Mekong which provide more chance of survival for the Mekong Dolphin.

Koh Phdao Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET) is a serene retreat located on a pristine island in the Mekong River, just 40 kilometers north of Kratie Town, Cambodia. This enchanting destination is a shining example of sustainable tourism, seamlessly blending natural beauty, cultural immersion, and community empowerment.

As visitors step onto the island, they are greeted by the tranquil charm of traditional stilt houses, lush green rice fields, and the gentle flow of the mighty Mekong. Managed entirely by the local community, Koh Phdao CBET offers a chance to experience authentic rural Cambodian life while supporting the livelihoods of its residents.

A stay on Koh Phdao often includes the warm hospitality of local families through homestay experiences. Guests are welcomed into traditional wooden homes, where the aroma of freshly cooked Khmer meals fills the air. Every dish is a celebration of local flavors, prepared with care and served with pride.

The island is a haven for eco-friendly activities that invite travelers to immerse themselves in its natural wonders. Cycling along quiet village paths reveals breathtaking views of the countryside, while walking tours offer a glimpse into the daily lives of its inhabitants. Adventurous souls can kayak along the Mekong’s serene waters, gliding past sandbanks and spotting the rare and endangered Irrawaddy dolphins.

Koh Preah

We collaborated with the Koh Tnaot Community-Based Ecotourism initiative in 2018. Our objective was to establish ecotourism development activities for the community as an alternative livelihood, aiming to reduce local involvement in illegal logging.

Koh Preah, located in Stung Treng Province along the majestic Mekong River, is a hidden gem of natural beauty and cultural heritage. This peaceful island is home to Koh Preah Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET), an initiative dedicated to sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and preserving the unique biodiversity of the Mekong.

Visitors to Koh Preah are welcomed by the island’s serene landscapes, where traditional stilt houses are nestled among lush greenery and the river’s gentle currents create a tranquil ambiance. The community’s warmth and hospitality invite travelers to immerse themselves in the simple yet vibrant rhythm of rural Cambodian life.

A visit to Koh Preah offers a range of eco-friendly activities. Guests can enjoy cycling along scenic village paths, exploring the island’s natural and cultural treasures, or joining local fishermen to learn traditional fishing techniques. The highlight for many is the opportunity to spot the elusive and endangered Mekong dolphin, a symbol of the river’s ecological richness.

Koh Preah CBET was established to provide sustainable livelihoods for the local community, reducing dependence on overfishing and creating alternative income sources. This effort not only supports the preservation of the Mekong’s fragile ecosystem but also enhances the survival chances of its iconic dolphin species.

For those seeking a meaningful travel experience, Koh Preah is more than just a destination—it’s a journey into the heart of Cambodia’s natural and cultural heritage. It’s a place where the harmony between people and nature is celebrated, leaving visitors inspired by its beauty and the community’s commitment to sustainability.
